Please Don’t Say This to a Librarian

libraryjournal:

ex-tabulis:

From Miss Ingrid, the awesome @MagpieLibrarian

There are some whoppers in here.

Amen to the bit about things you say to a librarian that aren’t annoying. Also not annoying: when your extremely young child makes sounds of glee in the library (another matter when your kid throws a fit or starts destroying things).

“I hate to bother you!” or “Are you busy? OK, this isn’t annoying at all, to be honest, but I just don’t get it. Hey, patrons! We’re here to help! You’re not bothering us. Seriously! Did you have a mean middle school librarian who yelled at you every time you asked a question and then peered over her glasses in a disapproving manner? Not cool. Just ask. Don’t feel bad about asking as many questions as you need to. Don’t apologize for not knowing the Dewey Decimal system or where to find a book. Don’t feel the need to admit to us that the last time you were in a library was 10 years ago like this is some sort of confessional. Unnecessary. It’s our job to help you. This shouldn’t make you feel bad or like you’re a nuisance.

For a lot of people, if they can’t get it cheap or free, they just won’t get it. For some people, it’s that they don’t have any money. The Discount Diva profiles the thinking of the cheap middle class, those who have some money, but don’t want to part with what they have. Just watch people haggle over library fines to see how cheap they are.

Libraries are helping both of them, and providing them with free stuff, but it’s free stuff that wouldn’t have been bought.

That’s why publishers have to understand before they lose their irrational fear of libraries. Libraries aren’t for pirates. They’re for the poor and the cheap, and there’s no more money to be made from either of them.

I just knew then, at age 16, that it was meant to be. Even further back, when I was a kid, my mom once caught me at a bookstore straightening the shelves and putting the books in order, and I think she knew then that it was my destiny. It is just a field that I really get. I understand it; I am passionate about it; and I know it is where I should be.

I also enjoy being around librarians in general. They’re always willing to help or give advice, and they’re fun!

”It’s not true that nobody reads anymore (or that we just have a bunch of dusty old books!). It’s not true that everything you want is available online. People need libraries, and yet budgets are being slashed and the work that we do is frequently minimized or denigrated. It’s not an easy time to be a librarian, but I think it’s an important one.”

I am literally wearing a plaid shirt, am bearded, and about to ride a bicycle. And I am of course an actual librarian.
What this venn diagram suggests is very scary indeed.
