Five Question Friday: Kate and the Tumblarians

image

Here, Kate poses with her very prestigious libbanana.

After interviewing Kate thelifeguardlibrarian awhile back, I noticed things have taken off with the librarians-on-tumblr phenomenon, with Kate at the forefront as an informal organizer and motivator. Here, I ask her about what’s changed, both in her life and in what it means to be a librarian on tumblr, since we last talked.

Jackson Radish the Teen Services Library Student

1.) Can you tell us about your current position?

Right now I’m finishing up grad school and doing a practicum with a teen librarian at one of the largest public library systems in the world.  The practicum is basically an unpaid internship for school credit.  Prior to doing this practicum, I was working two paid internships with teen librarians at different suburban public libraries in Michigan, and prior to that I had an unpaid volunteer internship with teens at an urban public library in Michigan.  That was not the community where I wanted to ultimately live, though, so I decided to get an internship in the community where I wanted to ultimately live and work.  I’ve gotten very different experiences working with teens in all four libraries and have loved all of it!  I’m currently looking for my first post grad school librarian position, as I am graduating in December.

I got really interested in the issue of young adult literature for trans teens early on in school and it has kind of become a huge professional interest of mine.

Sue the Archivist

1. Can you tell us about your current position?
I am the archivist for an institute located at a private, liberal arts college in southern California. I am a lone arranger and since my institute has very little staff, I wear many hats. On top of my usual archive tasks of creating archive policies, archival processing, cataloging and managing the DVD library, reference work, etc., I also do graphic design, videography, and video editing.

When I was a film major in college, I always sat through the end credits to see the various roles involved in production. At the end of one of the Harry Potter movies, I noticed a credit for the archivist. I had no idea what an archivist was then, but I was intrigued after reading the career description.
