MAKE YOUR OWN ZINE / DIY KIT made to give away at our Summer Reading Kick-OFF DIY Carnival to promote our upcoming Bookmaking class. It includes pre-folded zine pages, pencil, markers, stickers and patterned paper.

This is awesome, and I wish I’d thought of it in time to tie into my April break lineup of altered book workshops. What other Library DIY kits could we make? Bookplates? I’m trying to think of something, but instead find myself hypnotized by the little GIF in my dashboard background for Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day.

The Madness Underneath, Maureen Johnson

The Madness Underneath, Maureen Johnson (2/2013)

(#2 in the Shades of London series after The Name of the Star, reviewed here)

Scenario: Rory’s a survivor. After her encounter with a ghost mimicking Jack the Ripper, though, she’s behind on schoolwork and a bit tired of tuning out her therapist. When she gets a chance to return to Wexford, she’s up for it. Even if she can still see ghosts, returning to school means seeing her friends again and regaining a measure of normalcy, right?

Pros:

  • Rory, always. She’s deeply weird but self-aware, articulate, and funny. Johnson also has this ability to incorporate lots of humorous, only tangentially related stories from Rory’s past, giving her a sort of depth and appeal as a narrator that remind me of Ellie Linton in Tomorrow, When the War Began.
  • Changes in the love department. Need I say more?
  • Setting. I spent fall 2007 in Oxford, often visiting my then-fiance at his program in London. The descriptions are pretty spot-on and make me very nostalgic.

Cons:

  • This one is so clearly a middle book, covering only a couple weeks’ time, but it still makes for a welcome treat.

Bottom Line: I think I said it well in my review of The Name of the Star (though saying that sounds awfully self-involved!): “Not unlike the Harry Potter series, this one packs in a lot of popular elements not usually combined: boarding schools, murder mystery, the paranormal, and a fair punch of humor.”

Last night was our Anime Club HOLIDAY PARTY! W00t! It was really fun. We made Anime holiday ornaments and candy sushi!* Everyone who attended were able to choose an Anime book out of a huge selection of recently donated Anime/manga books. They loved it!

*Going to write up directions and suggestions soon for how to make candy sushi!

More on the Anime Club candy sushi program.

CANDY SUSHI!
Ingredients:
Rice crispy treats (homemade or store bought)
Fruit roll-ups
Various candies (Swedish Fish or Gummy Sharks are the best!)
Butter knife
Directions:
Wash hands! Everyone must wash their hands. It is a very hands-on activity.
Cut or mold rice crispy tree into the desired size or shape.
Place candy fish on top of rice crispy treat.
Secure the fish on top by wrapping fish and rice crispy treat tightly with part of a fruit roll-up. You should be able to wrap several sushi rolls with just one fruit roll-up.
Take pictures and enjoy! Yum!

Filing this away for future teen programming. Way cool.

Jackson Radish the Teen Services Library Student

1.) Can you tell us about your current position?

Right now I’m finishing up grad school and doing a practicum with a teen librarian at one of the largest public library systems in the world.  The practicum is basically an unpaid internship for school credit.  Prior to doing this practicum, I was working two paid internships with teen librarians at different suburban public libraries in Michigan, and prior to that I had an unpaid volunteer internship with teens at an urban public library in Michigan.  That was not the community where I wanted to ultimately live, though, so I decided to get an internship in the community where I wanted to ultimately live and work.  I’ve gotten very different experiences working with teens in all four libraries and have loved all of it!  I’m currently looking for my first post grad school librarian position, as I am graduating in December.

Pretty. I’ve read Oregon and Illinois and Minnesota and Maine and North Carolina and the state of The Fault in Our Stars, whose state I don’t recognize because I’m awful at geography and mostly just remember crying straight through while lying in bed (first trimester is a laugh).
