The Escondido Public Library's Farmers Market Outreach

“Since we weren’t selling anything, the only way to attract customers was to ask them a question. We went with “Have you been to the library recently?” If that stopped them (it did about 80% of the time), we’d follow up with “May I tell you about your new program?” And then we’d launch into a quick description about LibraryYOU.”

We mostly just waggle free children’s books at them, if possible, for our farmer’s market outreach. Last week, I almost accosted two very young mothers, one with a baby in a stroller, the other pregnant, in an attempt to get them to stop by. It could be written someday on my professional gravestone: Teen mothers, please use the library and read to your children! (Well, all mothers.)
