  • songs in novels (this means you, Tolkien)
  • geography or elaborate descriptions of layouts, with or without accompanying maps (Tolkien again; also, the Tomorrow series)
  • post-apocalyptic books with no hope (On the Beach, for instance)
  • most present-tense YA (I will inevitably read them anyway, but complain a great deal)
  • grieving girl books
  • how Cormac McCarthy believes he’s above proper punctuation. It’s(/Its) distracting.
