non-exhaustive list of things I inexplicably loathe in books
- songs in novels (this means you, Tolkien)
- geography or elaborate descriptions of layouts, with or without accompanying maps (Tolkien again; also, the Tomorrow series)
- post-apocalyptic books with no hope (On the Beach, for instance)
- most present-tense YA (I will inevitably read them anyway, but complain a great deal)
- grieving girl books
- how Cormac McCarthy believes he’s above proper punctuation. It’s(/Its) distracting.
